How To Be Cool - With Styling

Shelf styling: both a dream and a nightmare. It looks amazing once it's done, but the process can be tricky.

Even as designers, we're constantly rearranging and "jujing" until things feel right.

Here are some rules to follow when styling a shelf — or maybe not rules?

• Fill the shelves first, adjust later. It's easier to work with a base than a blank canvas — you'll see what works and what doesn't.

• Books, books, and more books! They're the perfect space filler and add an organic touch to any shelf.

• Avoid perfect symmetry. Run the other way, fast. The most organic-looking shelves feel visually balanced, but not identical from one side to the other.

• Groupings of three are incredibly pleasing to the eye, so look for ways to arrange your decor using the "rule of threes."

• Greenery that drapes between shelves is a great way to visually tie different sections together, keeping the eye moving around the bookcase as a whole.

These aren't a strict set of rules — but hopefully they help the next time you're styling a space.
